In a tropical climate like the one that exists in India, the central air conditioner is extremely useful for businesses and homes alike. To beat the heat, a central ac is typically installed in commercial and residential properties.

What configuration of central ac one should choose? What is the most cost effective solution? These are some of the questions that come to one’s mind.

The centralized air conditioning system can be categorized in 2 ways:

  1. Central ac for home
  2. Central air conditioning system for commercial buildings such as malls, hospitals, offices, airports, warehouses, cold storages, showrooms, bank branches, hotels, restaurants, clinics, resorts, fitness centers, etc.

TheSmartHVAC provides a central air conditioning solution to homeowners and commercial property owners / building managers across India.

  1. Central ac for home

Gone are the days of windows or split air conditioner units in individual rooms. These days, people are opting for a VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) / VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) central air conditioning system for the entire home. Whether it’s an apartment in a high-rise, or an individual home / bungalow, the central ac provides comfort across the entire home.

Instead of installing multiple numbers of outdoor units for each and every room, the central ac system uses a single outdoor unit that can be connected to multiple indoors units via the copper piping. Therefore, free space is created with the elimination of multiple numbers of outdoor units giving your home surroundings a neat and clean look. Some of the features:

  • Piping length of 100 meters that’s more than enough to cover an entire home
  • Auto human detection feature
  • Choose your own control mechanism from a varied range of wired remote controller / touch screen controller / wireless remote control / central station / cloud control
  • Automatic filter cleaning feature
  • Aesthetic and sleek design of indoor units (Cassette, Hi-Wall, floor/ceiling convertible, In-the ceiling)
  • Warm heating as well as comfort cooling options
  • Twin rotary compressor / efficient performance
  • Lower noise level / Quiet operation
  • Easy to install and maintain

Design

TheSmartHVAC team focuses on design and planning. With proper design, the accurate load for your home is estimated. The load calculations are the most important step in the design process. The load calculations ensure that the cost is optimized and as a homeowner you pay the right price. The load is calculated based on the size of the home, doors and windows pattern in the home, home’s exposure to the sun, and the type of roof. Once the load has been estimated, the next step is the choice of outdoor and indoor units. The outdoor unit is placed in such a way that the length of the connecting pipe between an outdoor unit and multiple indoor units is minimized.

Installation

Once the design has been approved by the client, TheSmartHVAC installation team starts the implementation work under the supervision of a design engineer. The connecting pipelines are checked thoroughly to make sure that there are no leakages. The design engineer tests the entire installation as per the checklist. And only after a rigorous testing, the central ac for home is handed over to the homeowner.

  1. Central ac for commercial properties

When it comes to central ac for commercial buildings, there are basically 3 options: Ductable AC, VRF / VRV, Chiller

2.1 Ductable AC

As the name suggests, ductable AC incorporates ductwork to deliver conditioned cool or hot air to various parts of a commercial property such as banks, showrooms, fitness centers, offices, hotels, hospitals, clinics. A ductable unit typically has an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit ranges from 3 TR to 16.5 TR (Tonnage of Refrigeration). Correspondingly, the indoor unit delivers airflow ranging from 1200 CFM to 6600 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute). Depending on the tonnage capacity, an outdoor unit may have 1 compressor or 2 compressors or 3 compressors. The choice of compressor can be either scroll type compressor or rotary/twin rotary type compressor. Likewise, depending on the airflow volume, an indoor unit may have 1 blower or 2 blowers or 3 blowers. The outdoor unit and indoor unit are connected with each other through suction and liquid copper pipes. Wiring and drain pipe are the other essential items that complete a ductable unit. Indoor units generally come with a remote control to switch on/off the machine, to control and set the temperature, to control blower speed. The outdoor unit comes with factory charged, and properly tested refrigerant.

Benefits of ductable units

Ongoing research and development by leading manufacturers of ductable units has resulted in energy saving features, long lifespan, compact design, and quieter operations for these units. Because of these features, low upfront cost, and ease in installation, the ductable units are a highly sought-after cooling solution in the Indian commercial HVAC market. A ductable AC is ideal for small to medium size commercial space wherein the same temperature has to be maintained throughout the whole space. Some of these spaces are fitness centers, restaurants, bars, bank branches, office spaces, auditoriums, common areas in clinics and hospitals, food courts, cinema halls, etc. Before installing a ductable unit, one should however make sure that the design process has been thoroughly completed. The right design for a ductable unit generally includes correct capacity (in terms of TR), correct piping work, correct wiring work, and correct ducting work. These are the major costs in any given ductable AC.

Design for ductable units

The first and foremost step in opting for a ductable AC is to identify whether or not the ductable unit is the right choice for your space or not. As highlighted above, a ductable air conditioner is ideal for spaces wherein the same temperature has to be maintained. Therefore, warehouses, office spaces, restaurants, hotels, common areas in large hospitals, airports, bars, etc. are ideal for ductable type cooling solutions. In case, for example, there are many rooms or cabins or zones within a given space and each and every room or zone or cabin wants to have the flexibility to set the temperature, in that scenario, it’s better to opt for VRF / VRV solutions. Sometimes, it makes sense to adopt an hybrid model wherein a combination of cooling solutions are incorporated to achieve the ideal HVAC design. And ductable units can certainly be part of this ideal hybrid HVAC design.

The next step in the design process is to estimate the correct capacity or load (measured in TR or tonnage) for the space under consideration. These calculations are best undertaken by the HVAC professionals. An HVAC design engineer can estimate the peak load and average load and subsequently suggest innovative solutions to clients. Based on the size of the space, a single ductable unit (outdoor + indoor) or several ductable units can be chosen. Say, for example, the capacity or load comes out to be 50 TR. In that scenario, 3 ductable units of 16.5 TR each can be chosen. Thereafter, the amount of copper piping that will be required is estimated. Since copper piping work is expensive, therefore, the design engineer should make sure that the distance between an outdoor unit and an indoor unit is not too large. Ideally, an outdoor unit and an indoor unit should be located in close proximity not only to reduce the cost but also to improve the efficiency of the whole system. If an outdoor unit and an indoor unit are located in close proximity, then, that will also bring down the cost for the wiring work. And lastly, ducting work is estimated. In most cases, a plenum is also built. The plenum is connected to the indoor unit at one end and to the duct line at the other end. A canvas connection is provided between the indoor unit and the plenum. This is done to eliminate the vibrations in the duct line. Once the design has been approved by the client, the next stage is the installation of these ductable units.

Installation

In most cases, the indoor units are ceiling mounted. In a few instances, the floor mounted indoor units are also used. The installation team installs the indoor unit and outdoor unit. Thereafter, plenum is mounted and then the ductwork begins. Mounting of indoor unit and outdoor unit is straightforward and does not take much time. However, plenum and ductwork installation takes time. Now, copper piping work begins and the outdoor unit is connected with the indoor unit. 2 to 3 days of testing is required to make sure that there are no leakages in the copper piping or else the actual refrigerant may leak during the regular operation of the ductable AC. Wiring work and drain pipe work are the last steps in the installation process.

TheSmartHVAC approach to ductable projects across India

It is clearly evident that the design is at the heart of any ductable project. And with its in-house team of experienced design engineers, TheSmartHVAC makes sure that the right solution is provided to customers across India. The focus is to reduce the upfront capital expenditure and recurring operating expenditure (electricity consumption). Therefore, load or capacity calculations are precisely estimated. Small small things like the distance between the outdoor unit and the indoor unit or the shape of the duct are kept in mind. Daikin, Hitachi, Carrier, Bluestar, Voltas are some of the equipment suppliers for implementation of ductable units across Delhi, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Noida, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, and many other parts of India.

2.2 VRF / VRV for commercial buildings

While a ductable AC is ideal for a commercial space wherein the same temperature needs to be set across the whole space, a VRF / VRV system is ideal for commercial buildings wherein different temperatures need to be set across different zones/rooms/areas. Hotels, offices, malls, hospitals, resorts are some of the commercial properties that are best suited to a VRF system or a VRV system. A VRF AC or a VRV AC typically involves outdoor units and indoor units. Based on the load calculations, a single outdoor unit or multiple outdoor units can be chosen. These outdoor units are then connected to different indoor units via the copper piping. Each and every indoor unit comes with a control system to on/off the unit, or set the temperature. Therefore, with the VRF / VRV air conditioning system, the flexibility to operate the indoor units is achieved.

VRF VRV AC

Design

For a large commercial building, the load calculations for a VRF / VRV ac system takes weeks. This is an important task as overloading will not only increase the upfront capital expenditure but also increase the recurring operating expenditure. Whereas underloading will result in a bad experience for the people inside the building. Therefore, utmost attention should be given to the design and load calculations. TheSmartHVAC team focuses its attention to the overall design and load calculations in order to recommend the right solution to its clients across India. Piping work, wiring work constitute the other major tasks in the design process.

Installation

Once the design has been freezed, TheSmartHVAC installation team works under the supervision of the design team to install the outdoors units and indoor units in addition to carry out the pipework and wirework. Installation can take weeks depending on the size of the commercial property in question.
